Common Billiards FAQs

Solid color billiard balls sit in a pile. all different colors but instead of numbers they have a question mark on them.

Billiards is a game steeped in tradition and skill, enjoyed by players of all levels and ages around the world. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been playing, things are always evolving and changing. New questions come up about the rules, techniques, and equipment. Hopefully we can help answer a few common ones today. At S&T Billiards in Bowie, MD, we love helping enthusiasts sharpen their skills and knowledge.

What’s the difference between billiards, pool, and snooker?                                                 These terms are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different games. Billiards typically refers to any game played on a table with pockets and balls, but in Europe and France, it often refers to carom billiards. This is a version which is played without pockets. Pool is the most popular version, usually played with 8 or 9 balls on a table with six pockets. Snooker, on the other hand, is played with 21 balls on a larger table with smaller pockets and has its own unique set of rules.

What size table should I use for playing pool at home?                                                               Pool tables come in a range of sizes, with the standard being 9 feet for professional games. However, for home use, many people opt for a 7-foot or 8-foot table. The size you choose depends on the space you have available and how seriously you take the game. At S&T Billiards, we can help you choose the right table for your home setup.

How do I choose the right cue stick?                                                                                                      Cue sticks come in various lengths and weights, choosing the right one depends on your playing style and comfort. Most cues are 57 or 58 inches long and weigh between 17 and 21 ounces. A lighter cue may offer more control, while a heavier cue can provide more power. The grip and tip also matter, so it’s a good idea to try out different cues to see which feels best for you. At S&T Billiards, we carry a range of cues and can offer personalized advice on finding the right one. If you’ve never played before and have no idea what your preference is, we’re more than happy to let you use our tester cues to find the perfect fit.

How can I improve my aiming skills?                                                                                                     Aiming in billiards is all about practice and understanding the angles. One effective technique is the "ghost ball" method, where you visualize a ball in the exact position where the cue ball needs to hit the object ball. Another tip is to focus on your stance and follow through, making sure your body and cue are aligned properly.

What’s the best way to care for my billiards table?                                                             Maintaining your billiards table will ensure it lasts for years and continues to play well. Brush the felt regularly to keep it clean and free of debris. Always use a cover when the table is not in use. Avoid spills and keep the table away from direct sunlight to prevent damage to the felt. If you need further maintenance or repairs, S&T Billiards in Bowie, MD, can direct you to one of our trusted personnel.

What are the basic rules for 8-ball pool?                                                                                                     In 8-ball, players try to pocket either all of the striped or solid-colored balls before sinking the 8-ball. The game begins with a break, and whichever type of ball (solid or striped) is pocketed first determines what the player must aim for. The game is won by pocketing the 8-ball after all of your designated balls are cleared, but if you sink the 8-ball early or commit certain fouls, you lose.

How do I make sure my billiard game stays fun and friendly?                                                          Billiards is a game of skill and strategy, but it's also meant to be enjoyable. The key to keeping the game fun is to focus on improving your skills, but also to respect the etiquette of the game. Take turns fairly, avoid excessive celebrations after a win, and be supportive of others learning the game. At S&T Billiards, we encourage a friendly, inclusive atmosphere for players of all levels to enjoy the game.
